After reading about the Unkar + 9’s deck that won the European National Championship (https://swdestinydb.com/decklist/view/10449/eunkarrfntrooper-europeanchampionships1stplace-1.0), I was immediately intrigued and built an exact copy of the deck to test. The deck is a machine. It has control, damage, and discard, everything you could want out of a deck. I have been testing the deck over the past month and even though it was definitely fantastic, I found a few changes that I think make the deck a whole lot better.

The first was Gaffi Stick. I subbed in the F-11D Rifle and fell in love with it. I kept redeploy, but gained a dice with sides I wanted more. The F-11 D also helped with the end of tighter games where I was typically left with a Stormtrooper.

I also found that Friends in Low Places usually had a low impact on the games I was struggling to win. It is what is called a ‘win more’ card. I felt like a bit more control would help the deck win some of those tighter games. As I was looking through my collection, I had no idea why Flank was not in the deck. The deck starts with three characters and consistently rolls FN into the pool late in the turn. I almost always have more characters ready than my opponent.

After I have been testing a deck for a while, I like to lay my deck out. I try to pinpoint the cards that I don’t ever get excited to draw. I also usually do this before heading to big events as well. A few Tulsa locals and I were heading down to Texas for my first Star Wars: Destiny Store Championship of the season this past weekend, so I decided to lay my deck out one last time. As I was looking through my deck, one card was sticking out in particular… IQA-11 Blaster Rifle.

The card just really never impacted the game as much as the rest of my deck. The +3 can be used with Unkar’s ability and the damage can be nice, but I never got excited to draw it. As I was looking through my binder for any suitable replacements, there was one card that kept sticking out… Thermal Detonator.

After the Fast Hands errata, the meta has been shifting to three character builds. Those games can be tough for my deck to win, as there is just so much health to work through. Since I usually have extra resources available, the ability to drop in Detonator for a 2 or a ton of damage seemed to be a great fit. I decided to make the change, even though I had no time left to test the deck before the Store Championship. I guess the proof would have to be in the pudding!

I wrote a full report that I posted on my Team Covenant blog (https://teamcovenant.com/star-wars-destiny/elite-unkar-fn-fo-destiny-store-championship-report). In short though, Thermal Detonator paid big dividends at the event and if you have yet to try this deck (with or without Detonators), I strongly recommend giving it a spin!
