How to play:

Mulligan - Look for an upgrade or 2. Keep the low cost removal. Throw back the cards that cost 3 or 4. I also throw away healing cards and force illusions.

Try to shield all incoming damage. Play upgrades on Rieekan, unless they focus him. I think that Yoda is the correct target for opponents, since almost all of the removal is spot blue. Don't waste removal on things that hit shields. I never remove single damage dice, unless it enables a modifier. The goal is to absorb damage on shields, because re-shielding is usually free.

Try to go into each turn with 4 resources in case you draw Emergency Evacuation.

On Yoda, the special priority is resource>shield>mill. I never mill turn 1, and only rarely turn 2.

In the mid game, you want to set your opponent up for massive removal plays. I.e. they roll out one character and get 1 or 2 damage sides. I like to krayt dragon howl here. Either result is fine. They will usually resolved some thing, while leaving 2 or so dice out. They will then activate the second character to get more out of their precious re-rolls. Then you hit them with Mind Trick or Emergency Evacuation.

Watch out for cards that sneak extra turns for your opponent (ancient lightsaber and chance cube are the big ones). We deal with ancient pretty well with yoda specials, spy net, and force meditation, but you need to save actions/dice to do so.

Some notable cards:

Strike Briefing - I hold this until after rieekan activates and after i've resolved Force Meditation, but before resolving Yoda specials (if able). This lets me see the next 3 cards and discard the worst one - always Handcrafted Light Bow or Vibroknife. Then i can decide if i need to mill the next card with Yoda. This way the turn will end and fill their hand with trash, and if i need to get 2 of the next three cards i can use Yoda for mill, otherwise i can use it for resource.

Emergency Evacuation - I love this card. I don't think i can run 2 for fear of drawing them both early, but any time from turn 2 on, i think it's amazing.

Determination - People never see the determination plays coming. Even with c-3po on the table, people feel save until he rolls out. Oftentimes it's better to hit them with the surprise determination, when they are planning to Doubt C-3PO and steal an extra turn. This also gives us an out of C-3PO gets vandalized.

Defensive Position and Dug in - These cards are not in the deck. I play very slow (in terms of actions). I often have 4-5 actions left after my opponent claims. There may be a version of the deck fast enough to run those cards, but it is not this one.

MD regional report:

I had a blast at this very well run event (thanks Games and Stuff). Everyone was cordial, despite playing vs a mill deck.

Disclaimer- I didn't take notes at the event, so i may misremember some events at the tournament. If so i apologize in advance.

Round 1 vs eYoda/eChewbacca

I have played this match-up previously, so i knew generally what the deck did. I have 0 damage sides in my deck, which turned off Chewbacca - Loyal Friend's special. So my opponent had to turn the dice to damage sides without immediately resolving damage, which theft them vulnerable to my removal. I won this game, mostly because it is just lopsided in favor of the mill deck. 1-0

Round 2 vs eKylo/eTalzin

This was the fourth time i had played this player with the same matchup over various tournaments, so we were very familiar with each other's decks. My color split is nearly 50/50 with some grey, which makes kylo's ability inconsistent. Versus mixed damage, I have time to re-shield between damage resolutions, and through a combination of luck and removal the Sith Holocrons never resolved. My opponent went on to go 5-2 and was 9th. 2-0

Round 3 vs Yoda/Rieekan/Partisan This is an interesting matchup. Without damage pressure on either side, i think it comes down to who has better ramp for their mill, as well as some luck on which key cards get milled first. I believe that my deck ramps mill more effectively with force meditation, spy net, and the surprise mill of determination+focus+chance cube. It was still a very close game. I had 2 cards left in my deck when i got his last cards. 3-0

Round 4 vs Boba/7th

Turn 1 my opponent used friends in low places to strip my removal, then proceeded to hit me for 10ish damage. I shielded a fair bit of it, but it left yoda in kill range. I managed to keep yoda alive long enough to force illusion him, but the foce illusion ended up taking 8 damage (cutlass + maul's), and milled a lot of my key cards. Eventually, yoda went down, which turns off almost all of my removal. My opponent made some celver plays with removal timings and ancient to extend the game for 2 extra turns, but he rolled very poorly with no rerolls available, which let me eventually get his cycling ancient lightsaber with force meditation. By all rights i should have lost this match, but (through no fault of my opponent) the dice gods were in my favor. 4-0

Round 5 vs Brotk

Turn 1 i played a Scout, which puts me in a good position to remove his key combo pieces. I saw he had Leadership, but he was also holding a Doubt, so i cound't get it that turn. At the start of turn 2 he lightsaber pulled a Maul's Lightsaber, which combined with the extra ID9 Seeker Droid he played turn1, made 7th very scary. I tried a few times to get a scout special to remove a potential price of failure, but i had wasted my yoda dice earlier in the turn, and his nightsister kept re-rolling the scout. I gave up on rerolling and let him play his turn, which was my downfall, as he got 2 sister resets, killed rieekan, and put yoda at 4 health remaining. On the next turn i failed to count to 5 damage, and he killed yoda through a shield while i was holding removal, but there was no way i was winning from that position anyway. 4-1

Round 6 vs Poe/Hondo

I remember very little of this game, i may even have rounds 6 and 7 mixed up. My strategy vs all hondo decks is the same: never pay early, just try to shield the damage. 5-1

Round 7 vs eRey/eAayla

This game is also a blurr. I was pretty sure i had made the cut going into the game, since my SOS on the standings was quite high. I think i milled both lightbows and 1 shoto, so my shields kept me alive for the win. 6-1

I ended the swiss in the #2 spot, behind the brotk player who was my only loss.

Quarterfinal vs Tarkin/7th -Joe

I won this match 2-1.
Game 1 i won the roll and used his battlfield (Fort Anaxes - Anaxes. So i started the game with 2 extra shields, and he had to claim early to prevent me from guardian-ing everything. i managed to ramp mill while he didn't manage to ramp. Game 2 we were on my battlefield. He hit me with 2 huge Scorched Earth plays, that i walked right into. He won this one easily. Game 3 i picked his battlefield. I played very carfully around Scorched Earth, completely resolving on character's dice before rolling in the other character. I think the initial battlefield roll may have been the deciding factor in this round, because Fort Anaxes - Anaxes hugely favored me and i literally have 0 dice to guardian away.

Semifinal vs Yoda/Honda - Drew from arrowbrook gaming

My goal for the tournament was to get the spot gloss thrawn, and Drew had already won the WV regional, so this game didn't have the tension of earlier rounds, though we both wanted the win. Again, i think battlefield choice was important, though in the opposite direction. I wanted to play on my bf, and he wanted to play on Frozen Wastes - Starkiller Base, because he is much faster than me, and will usually kill a Rieekan or Yoda die.
Game 1 I won game 1 with a Determination + Chance Cube play for his last 3 cards. Game 2 I got stomped. Yoda got surprise killed by a big all in ( i think). I ended up conceding to preserve time for round 3 when it looked like Rieekan had no way to pull it out. Game 3 I won a pretty close game, though i don't remember the details. We finished with 20 mins left in the round, so i wasn't forced to play too fast.

Final - I conceded to Isaac (Yoda/Hondo) in the final.

We did play an unofficial friendly best of 1 for fun, which i won.

Your title seems like you lost in the finals, I thought you won the event?

runningonion 1022

we split the prizes in the final, Isaac oficially won the event and got the worlds seat and the national bye, i got the trophy.

We played a friendly best of 1, which i won, but officially i came in second in the tournament, which is causing some confustion.

Congrats man - Great games in the Semi's!

The Mill v Mill is always an interesting match up and I think I learned a lot about it in our game. Fun game, glad to see a mill deck make it that far my dude.

No fall back?

runningonion 1022

Fall back would hit my own upgrades, which i want to keep. The rainbow mill uses fall back because it doesn't run worthwhile upgrades.

Very cool deck! Thanks for sharing it!

Looks good. Why no Bespin Wing Guard for the ongoing handmill and the final cards in the end?

runningonion 1022

I felt Bespin Wing Guard was too expensive. If you compare it to EMP Grenades, The first turn of grenades will get 2 cards for 3 resources, and it takes bespin wing guard 2 turns to get that same return. In the end, i decided that Determination and C-3PO were enough to get the final cards.

Did the Medical Droid pay off for you?
