This is my version of 7th/Tarkin that I managed to take to a 6-1 Swiss finish at the Hamilton, ON Regional held by Black Knight Games.

Deck Overview

Like many of the versions of the deck I have seen, my version evolved from the version BobbySapphire posted on thehyperloops.com back at the beginning of January. One of the first things I did was find room for Fragmentation Grenade. With 5 indirect sides and a Blank sticking 2 of these on Tarkin - Grand Moff all but guarantees his Power Action. Late game you can pay for more damage or even discard them to push through the last bit of damage. The other big addition to this deck for me was Scorched Earth. I started with 1 copy and after a little bit of testing decided I needed the 2nd copy due to the blowout, game winning potential. Force Wave didn’t see much play on the day but is really there for the 3 or 4 wide matchups.

The event package went through a big transformation the week before the event to make sure I could handle Specials as I expected to see a lot more Hondo Ohnaka - Respected Businessman at the event. Manipulate was a suggestion from my buddy Matt and I really liked it. I got a sick sort of pleasure blanking on of my opponents die while also making a 2nd blank for myself to fuel the Power Action. A lot of my removal cost 1 but I viewed it as a a better way to pay Hondo off since it at least kept him from getting the resource.

Event Overview

I drove up with 3 other guys from Metro Detroit the morning of the event. It was about a 4 hour drive with a stop for Breakfast and an uneventful border crossing. The event was very well run and had 41 players total. We played 7 rounds of Swiss with a cut to Top 8. A quick math check told me 5-2 with a strong SoS would make the cut.

Round 1
I was paired up with a player running eJango/ePhasma2. As one of my favorite decks to play I had a pretty good idea what it was capable of. I think I killed Captain Phasma - Ruthless Tactician in Round 2 and Jango Fett - Lethal Mercenary just couldn’t do enough before I killed him off. (1-0)

Round 2
I got paired with my buddy Ryan’s ePoe2/eHondo. We had play tested the matchup the night before and I was pretty comfortable with the matchup. I approach the Hondo Ohnaka - Respected Businessman matchup with the thought that I can’t let them win the damage race Round 1. If that means I have to pay them off to avoid a 2nd Hondo Special so be it. I don’t remember a ton of specifics of the match aside from using a focus post claim to take the final card from his hand instead of getting more damage and hit his Second Chance. (2-0)

Round 3
I found myself at Table 1 sitting across from my first of 3 eQui-Gon/eYoda decks on the day. This match was a slugfest, I think I did 40+ damage including Scorched Earth for 5 TWICE but still couldn’t punch through after a Force Illusion for 5 and 4x Ancient Lightsaber heals. My opponent here was the eventual King of Swiss and Runner-Up and I don’t think there was much more I could have done. (2-1)

Round 4
I came back from the lunch break telling myself I needed tow win the next 3 if I wanted a shot at the cut. I sat down across from my 2nd eQui-Gon/eYoda and was not feeling good after the previous Round. Fortunately I was able to ramp up damage before he could find his Force Illusion or Ancient Lightsaber’s. (3-1)

Round 5
This ended up being probably my most disgusting game of the day in terms of damage ramping. My opponent was playing eHan1/eRey1 and we found ourselves at the Starkiller Base featured table. I managed to take out both characters through a Second Chance in Round 3. I’m looking forward to seeing the video of this game posted. (4-1)

Round 6
I recognized the last name of my opponent here and realized I was facing the brother of my Round 3 opponent playing an identical list to the one I lost to. Fortunately he didn’t tank up quite as well and I was able to punch through to secure my spot in the cut. (5-1)

Round 7
It almost felt fitting to get to face down the mirror in the final round of Swiss. My opponent took an early lead taking out my Tarkin while having 11 health still remaining between his characters. Fortunately for me he wasn’t playing the same list and walked into a Scorched Earth for 8 that completely changed the game. After that I was able to finish him off and lock up the #2 seed in the Top Cut. (6-1)

Looking back at my Swiss results I’m really happy with how the deck preformed. I played 4 of the other Top 8 players on the day including my buddy Ryan in Round 2, the King of Swiss in Round 3, his brother in Round 6, and my mirror opponent in Round 7.

Top Cut
My Top Cut opponent was the eventual champion Mat from the Chance Cube running eSabine/Yoda. This was a deck I had zero experience playing against and I really wish our games had been recorded so that I could review them. I’m not sure if my strategy was wrong or if this is just a matchup I need a lot of luck to keep a character from falling too quickly to their burst.

I know Mat is doing a recap as well and there isn’t really a ton to say. I never felt like I was in the lead against his deck and only forced Game 3 because of a late misplay on his part. With 4 health left on Sabine Wren - Explosives Expert he rolled in without triggering Sabine’s ability, I felt like kind of a jerk telling him the trigger was missed and he couldn’t add the die to gain ambush and resolve but it also felt like the fair call. I was holding Scorched Earth and his 4 dice remaining in the pool gave me the win.

Looking Forward

Overall I’m really happy with how the deck preformed and I’m going to keep working on tuning it for Canadian Nationals and maybe Worlds if I can make it happen. The event suite will get an upgrade when Rivals releases with Hidden Motive and I think I need to consider dropping a Force Lightning for a Force Rend as a late game option to deal with Force Illusion, Ancient Lightsaber, or Second Chance.

Let me know what you think about the deck below and I’ll do my best to answer any questions.

Is there a reason you opted not to run Chance Cube? When I've played this deck I feel like its what makes me tick early on in terms of resource generation, and especially with Scorched Earth, a two cost event, I feel like it would be big - especially since it can also be used for Tarkin's Power Action

@Moophisto I cut Chance Cube mainly because of the cost to roll it in. I ran a lot of 1 cost removal and if I had to resolve the money to play removal I wasn’t using it for the Power Action. I was mainly saving Scorched Earth for late game and pitched it to retool if I pulled it to early and couldn’t afford it.

Was great meeting you and the games we played in top8 were really fun! Don't feel like a jerk about my misplay, this is a regional after all and we drove a distance to play and compete, the misplay was mine, not yours :) I'll say this, your deck was the one that scared me the most in this tournament, tough to choose a target and you can make either character pretty scary for late game. Well played and was great to meet you! Hope to see you at nationals if you make it up!
