EDIT: -2 Crossguard Lightsaber, -2 As You Command, -1 Rise Again +2 Crafted Lightsaber, +2 Chance Cube, +1 Dark Ritual
Grievous is back! My favourite villain from the Star Wars prequels is now paired up with Snoke. So, as soon as General Grievous - Fearsome Cyborg was spoiled, I wanted to use him. Many people will play him at elite, but I don't think it’s the way to go. I paired him with Snoke - Supreme Leader because of his power action.
Deck strategy:
Get 4 upgrades on Grievous by round 2.
How to do it:
There are actually multiple ways to do the combo. In your opening hand, you want 2-4 weapons/Lightsaber Pull, It Binds All Things, Well-armed, and possibly Force Speed and/or a free removal.
Well-armed is the only must (besides some weapons) but you only need it by the start of round 2. If you don’t have It Binds All Things, you will still land the combo, but won’t be able to use some of the expensive upgrades. If you’re using Imperial Armory - Death Star, It Binds All Things isn’t needed.
How the combo should work:
Lets assume that we have the best starting hand possible and that everything goes perfectly. Your starting hand is Ancient Lightsaber, Shoto Lightsaber, Maul's Lightsaber, It Binds All Things, Well-armed, and Sound The Alarm.
You have high chances on the battlefield, and you usually want the shields for Grievous. Only pick your battlefield if you don’t have a way to generate early resources.
1st turn - play Ancient Lightsaber on Grievous. If he has two shields as well, opponents will think twice before going after him.
2nd turn - roll in Grievous. You want to see a resource side on Grievous. If you don’t have a resource, don’t worry...
3rd turn - use Snoke's power action if Grievous is showing a resource. Otherwise, roll in Snoke. He should hit focus. If not, discard a less important card to reroll.
4th turn - either focus, reroll, or roll in Snoke.
5th turn - resolve Snoke's sides.
6th turn - claim if possible. If playing a fast deck, don’t resolve all sides to claim first. If your battlefield is used, play Maul's Lightsaber on Grievous.
Round 2: You start with either 5 or 3 resources.
You should have two upgrades in hand. If you didn’t use a free removal, you should discard it. If you didn’t have Well-armed, hopefully you get it this round. In this scenario, we'll say we have 5 resources. Our hand is now Well-armed, Maul's Lightsaber, Shoto Lightsaber, Dagger of Mortis, and Force Speed. The opponent would have done average 5 damage. If Grievous was targeted, he should still have 9 health.
1st turn - play Maul's Lightsaber with It Binds All Things.
2nd turn - pay for Shoto Lightsaber. You should have one resource remaining.
3rd action - play Well-armed to have a Dagger of Mortis.
4th action - Force Speed on Snoke.
Then, do some damage.
Round 3: Cards you want to see include: Force Speed, Close Quarters Assault, free removal, possible upgrade for Snoke, and Furious Assault.
This turn, you could be able to finish the game. The odds are that you also killed a character round 2.
If Snoke has one force speed, roll him in. If you have a second one in hand, play it instead.
Then, resolve force speed specials for 2-4 actions. If there isn’t any showing, focus.
If you have 2 actions, roll in Grievous. If you can discard 4 or more cards with Close Quarters Assault, do so. Otherwise, use Grievous' power action. If you have 4 actions, you can use Furious Assault, then Grievous' power action, then Close Quarters Assault, and finally resolve. Getting As You Command is not bad instead of Furious Assault.
If you don’t have It Binds All Things, do as the example, but with cheaper upgrades.
After that, play upgrades on Snoke if he's not the target. If he’s targeted, save up for Rise Again. Overwrite Force Illusion on Grievous if you need to. Hopefully your opponent will be more busy spending money on removals, and won’t have as much resources.
Thanks to everyone who made it this far! Hopefully you’ll give this deck a shot and let me know how it worked. If I’m lucky enough to pull Grievous and Snoke (Dagger of Mortis is replaceable with Heirloom Lightsaber or possibly Kylo Ren's Lightsaber) I might try this deck at a tournament this weekend. Please leave feedback or questions and I’ll make sure to reply as soon as I have the chance!

Sorry, I definitely forgot he ignores the colour restrictions on Maul and Kylo's sabers >.< #LearnToRead |

Crafted Lightsaber better than Crossguard Lightsaber |

It’s interesting. But playing it, I’d be targeting Grevious die with removal due to the power action...all of his sides are scary af with Snoke.... 3-5 melee, 4 disrupt or 3 resources. Seems like with 3 dice might be easy to play around. Will give it a shot though. |
Personally I hate that this doesn't let me use Darksaber. It's the best weapon for him. |
What about Honed Skills so that General Grievous - Fearsome Cyborg could have five upgrades, so that you don't have to overwright with Force Illusion. Or if he is not the target you could have five or six weapons on him for the end game. |

That's fair in that Scenario... although I'd probably be targeting GG's die early in game to prevent snoking period. When talking about removal I was focusing on GG which can be snoked. |
|
I've been playing around with GG2 since he was previewed.. a strategy that worked well early on and still kind of does is finding a good supporting character that can hold his own (pick someone blue)... then load up with the 2-3 good 2-costers you must have in every deck (shotos, ancients, etc), and the rest with garbage 1 costs... hunting rifle, frag grenade,DH-17, etc. You can then start power actioning early on, and then just override/upgrade with the good weapons as you get them. If GG is taking on way too much damage, you will then just load up the other character with the good weapons. Or make sure GG has some redeploys you upgrade to that dump on the other character. I run GG2 elite, his two dice are each their own weapons because of their powerful sides, opponents aren't sure if they need to mitigate the char dice or the garbage weapon dice. Either way, GG2 is going to hit your opponent in the face. Take away his char dice, that's cool, power action your garbage for 4 damage anyway. Take away the garbage weapon dice, that's cool, pummel them with GG's char dice. I only did some early play testing with it and found it enjoyable. My deck needs some updating since the WotF release though. It could be a lot better. Get Honed Stills and IBAT going and it gets ridiculous pretty quickly. I run him with Anakin1 currently, but am not too excited about him. There''s better options.Anakin1 never rolls damage :( |
So this whole combo is needs early resources from the lone grevious die with Snokes ability. If I'm playing against this deck, I'm removing the Grevious die above all else and then focusing my attack on him. How well does it work against that? |
|
I wouldnt have needed to know your strategy. The character build tells it. Grevious wants lots of weapons, so you need resources to get them. Snokes ability is only used on character dice. So if eliminate that one dice every turn, Snokes ability is meaningless. Also you will only have damage from any weapons you place. All of this is obvious. If I'm playing an aggressive deck, I will target Grevious because it appears you have no other way to win if he dies. If I have anything like vandalize or whatever to remove weapons, I will definitely use them given the opportunity. Your deck is likely geared towards him so your other options would be minimal if he falls. I'm not saying your deck is crap or anything. I'm saying that an experienced player will know how to deal with that, and assuming this is the approach they take, can you still win? |

Sounds good. I like the idea. Not one I'd thought of yet. Only option I figured was to try and get a bunch of cheap stuff on him as quickly as possible. Hadn't really thought about the best pairings to do that yet though. Curious to see how it evolves. Thats part of the fun is figuring out the weaknesses so you can eliminate them :) |
To be fair testing has been very limited. I’m not convinced this doesn’t get killed vs good players though regardless if they know the strategy. I’ll be curious how it runs after 30-40 games |

What’s everyone’s thoughts on replacing As You Command by Enrage? |
Crafted is best weapon for Grievous, and also a solid Logisitics hit. also suggest getting Tactical Mastery to roll in and use the Grievous power action |
This is the best deck I've ever seen this will break the game... |
|
For everyone interested, after 5 more games of testing, the combo was successful 4/5 times with the only time being due to a round 2 hand with no weapons. Every round 1, Grievous’ die was removed, but it didn’t change much. I figured that our battlefield (which has high chances of being won by our dices) can counter removals. So yeah, I’ll be continuing the testing and see the consistency of the deck on the long run. |
This is a great deck but Grievous has to taugh out atleast two rounds so you roll in those 4 uprades dice. Maybe you could include an Overconfidence or a removal so he won’t die to quick against an aggro deck. |
not sure if this is and has already been said but Furious Assault is spot 2 Red Characters... |
my bad just spotted it... ignore |
The only problem with this deck is that your opponent will be going for grievous, so while you’re trying to get the weapons on him, they will be going after him. Also, once you do get the weapons on him, it is hard to get his power action off without action cheating. Hopefully there will be a lower cost weapon in a future set or something that helps to make grievous a little more feared. |
Interesting - just keep in mind that Maul's and Kylo Ren's lightsabers are blue character only, so can't be played on Grievous (and Heirloom would not have redeploy if it was on him either).
